8th West-Bohemia / Vogtland international workshopGeodynamics of Swarm Earthquake Areas October 16 – 19, 2007Frantiskovy Lazne, Czech Republic Third circular Schedule The workshop starts on Tuesday, 16th October at 15:00 by an afternoon session and ends on Friday, 19th October by a field excursion at 17:00. On Wednesday and Thursday the morning and afternoon sessions will take place. We want to provide ample time for discussions. Besides the standard short questions to each talk, an extra time will be available at the end of each block for a moderated discussion based on questions prepared by the convener addressing the principal problems of the session. The evenings will be available for free open debates on selected topics and on the plans for joint research in smaller groups. The oral sessions will provide 20 minutes for a standard talk, including questions. In the case of sufficient time an introductory short talk will be available for each poster presentation. Program topics • Seismic observations (One century of seismometry in West Bohemia) • Earthquake swarms in West Bohemia/Vogtland • Earthquake swarms around the world • Structure of the crust and upper mantle • Fluids from the mantle to the surface • Driving mechanisms of earthquake sequences • Geodynamical processes Call for abstracts Please send by 15th September an abstract of your presentation by email to the address swarm.workshop@gmail.com. The abstract body should not exceed 300 words and should include the final title, list of authors and their affiliation in the format ABSTRACT TITLE A. Aman(1), B. Bman(2) (1) A affiliation, A email address (B) B affiliation The final title may slightly differ from the preliminary one filled in the registration form. The conference abstracts will be collected in a book of abstracts given to all participants. Please send the abstract as a PDF or MS Word attachment. A special issue of Studia Geophysica & Geodaetica (IF 0.656 in 2005) on swarm earthquakes is scheduled for autumn 2008 with a limit of approx. 10 articles. Please consider your interest to publish your results in this special issue; the deadline will be in November 2007. Registered participants We have over 60 registered participants, see the list. Workshop venue The meeting will take place in a small spa town of Frantiskovy Lazne (Franzensbad) in Sadova kavarna (Gardens Cafeteria), see the map below or this link . The cafeteria provides enough space for both the oral and poster sessions and also the dining facilities. Accommodation
 We have booked the nearby Metropol hotel (dependence of the hotel Savoy) for accommodation at special rates per person of 729 CZK for a single room and 540 CZK for a double room including breakfast (all prices include VAT of 19%) The hotel is situated in the vicinity of a large park and offers a pleasant and calm environment for the workshop. There is a limited number of single rooms. Please specify your preference for single rooms, we will reserve them on a first come, first served basis. We ask those who prefer a double room (especially the younger participants) to suggest their preferred room mates. Travelling By car – the hotel is situated in the centre of Františkovy Lázně, at the corner of Francouzská and Školní streets (see the map below or the link) A private parking area is available for the hotel guests By train - arrival: • Direction from Prague: The suitable trains R650 and R752 depart from Prague main station at 8:16 and 10:16 arriving at 11:56 and 13:56 to Františkovy Lázně. • Direction from Ústi nad Labem (Dresden): The suitable trains R810 and R614 depart from Ústi nad Labem west station at 8:42 and 10:42 with a change to the trains from Prague in Cheb. By train – departure: The excursion bus will drop you at the suitable train stations. The suitable trains R757 and R759 arrive to Prague main station at 19:45 and 21:45. The other suitable trains R611 and R421 arrive to Ústí nad Labem at 19:13 and 21:13. By plane: we will arrange transport from and to the Prague airport for the interested participants. Services, accompanying persons The spa town and its surroundings offer plenty of opportunities for relaxing walks and also a guided tour. Variety of therapeutic procedures is available for interested participants and accompanying persons. The fitness and wellness centre FitForum and AquaForum provides swimming pools, water attractions, sauna and other sport and leisure facilities. We can also help you arrange trips to the nearby castles of Loket, Bečov and Kynžvart, spa towns Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) and Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad) and the town of Cheb (Eger) with its historical centre and a castle. ADSL internet connection will be available in the conference room and most likely also in the hotel. Field excursion The Friday field excursion will cover geodynamical features of the area including geomorphology, CO2 degasation, quartenary volcanism and seismicity and will be concluded by a visit in the Seismohydrological station 'Wettinquelle' of the Saxon Academy of Sciences (SAW), Bad Brambach. Registration fee The registration fee of 3600 CZK (approx. 130 EUR) includes the conference expenses, lunch for three days, one social dinner, drinks for coffee breaks and a poster session and the excursion expenses. It will be paid cash on-site at the arrival of the participants.
