Physical properties of rocks and their relation to microstructure and chemical composition

Physical properties of rocks are in most cases controlled by their mineral composition and microstructure. Most of the physical properties have in rocks anisotropic nature which can be divided to the intrinsic anisotropy caused by mineral constituents and the anisotropy induced by occurrence of preferentially oriented pore space. In our work we focus on three main research areas relating physical properties to microstructural features observed in rocks. In first we study from different perspectives formation of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) in igneous, metamorphic as well as sedimentary rocks. The second research area of our group concentrates on microstructural control of pore space development and its preferred orientation and influence on porosity, permeability and thermal conductivity of rocks.
