Forecasts
of geomagnetic activity
Within
the scope of the activity of the Regional Warning Centre (RWC Prague), the
Geomagnetic Department has been carrying out short-term forecasts of geomagnetic
activity for over two years.
These forecasts are based on the knowledge of the long-term and seasonal
characteristics of geomagnetic disturbances and on the knowledge of the current geomagnetic conditions observed at the Geomagnetic Observatory Budkov in
southern Bohemia, as well as of the daily observations of the Sun carried out by
the Astronomical Institute Ondrejov. The solar activity data, coronal holes and
geomagnetic indices from the WDC Boulder were supplied via the INTERNET. The
Boulder data serve as a back-up and for comparison of the Budkov and Ondrejov
data. From 1995 YOHKOH soft X-ray images have been used to improve the quality
of the forecasts.
