Animation of the Great Japanese earthquake of March 11, 2011

The Tohoku earthquake of magnitude 9.0 on March 11, 2011 which occurred 140 km east of Honshu, Japan at the depth of 30 km ranks to the strongest earthqaukes in the instrumental history (i.e. since the last decade of the 19th century). The animation shows the distribution of aftershock epicenters. Click to the picture to run the animation. Earthquake coordinates were taken from the Earthquake Hazards Program of the USGS (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/), the map background from the Google Maps. Authors: Aleš Špičák, Václav Kuna and Matyáš Švejdík.

Project EPOS started November 1, 2010

EPOS: European Plate Observing System is the Research Infrastructure and E-Science for Data and Observatories on Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Surface Dynamics and Tectonics. The Preparatory Phase of this 7th FP European project started on November 1st, 2010 and will last four years. EPOS has been included in the European roadmap for research infrastructure coordinated by the European Strategic Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) in December 2008. Institute of Geophysics AS CR, Prague is one of twenty partners representing 18 European countries involved in the Preparatory Phase of EPOS. More details at www.epos-eu.org.

Two post-doctoral positions

Institute of Geophysics, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague opens 2 post-doctoral positions in theoretical and computational seismology. The successful candidates will work under the EU FP7 Consortium Project ‘Advanced Industrial Microseismic Monitoring’. Details are available here.

Seminars about Indonesia

Institute of Geophysics, Department of tectonics and geodynamics, organizes a series of lectures on Seismic and vulcanological activities in Indonesia in connection with a seismo-volcanological project jointly prepared by Institute of Geophysics, Institute of Rock Structure and Mechanics and Charles University. Seminars of leading German experts will take place at the lecture hall of the Institute on Thursdays February 18, March 4 and March 18 at 3 p.m. Details can be found in the section About us - Seminars.
