{"id":35965,"date":"2023-11-01T07:53:55","date_gmt":"2023-11-01T06:53:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ig.cas.cz\/modelovani-vyvoje-solneho-diapiru-les-avellanes\/"},"modified":"2023-11-01T08:16:37","modified_gmt":"2023-11-01T07:16:37","slug":"salt-diapir-evolution-laboratoty-modelling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ig.cas.cz\/en\/salt-diapir-evolution-laboratoty-modelling\/","title":{"rendered":"Salt diapir evolution in laboratory modelling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A study in which scientists combined findings from the field mapping of the <em>Les Avellanes<\/em> salt diapir in the Pyrenees and laboratory modelling of its formation.<br \/>\nGeodynamic processes take place on a&nbsp;large scale and happen over a&nbsp;very long time. \u201eWe gain a&nbsp;better understanding of the geodynamic processes through the analog modeling in laboratory,&#8221; says Prokop Z\u00e1vada from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ig.cas.cz\/en\/research\/teams\/dynamics-orogens-rock-deformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dynamics of orogen and rock deformation<\/a> group, and adds: &#8220;We were interested in the influence of the so-called &#8216;stringers&#8217; embedded in the original salt layer on the spreading of salt mass over the surface.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A salt diapir is a&nbsp;geological structure that is formed by the displacement of salts from the underlying layers towards the surface, due to their lower density compared to the overlying rocks. Stringers are pieces of other sedimentary rocks encased in salt deposits. Compared to salts, they are less ductile and they tear and fold inside the salt mass. \u201eTheir arrangement on the surface reflects the way the salt mass is transported and deformed inside the diapir body and later flows over the Earth&#8217;s&nbsp;surface,&#8221; says Ond\u0159ej Kr\u00fdza from the GF\u00da.<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel Cofrade Rivas, the first author of the publication, is a&nbsp;PhD student in the group focused on salt tectonics and modelling (Geomodels Research Institute, University of Barcelona, Spain).
