This project is funded by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic and aims to unravel how high crystal content and deformation mechanisms influence catastrophic transitions from viscous flow to brittle fragmentation in crystal-rich lavas. These processes control eruption dynamics and lava-dome collapse at active volcanoes such as Mt. St. Helens, Unzen, and Mt. Pel\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42948 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ig.cas.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/figure-leaflet-new-logo-1024x738.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"738\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ig.cas.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/figure-leaflet-new-logo-980x707.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.ig.cas.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/figure-leaflet-new-logo-480x346.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Project Description<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The physical properties of highly crystalline lavas (&gt;50% crystals) control the dynamics of many explosive eruptions. However, their non-Newtonian rheology\u2014driven by crystal\u2013melt interactions, shear thickening, and ductile tearing culminating in brittle fragmentation\u2014remains poorly constrained. The goal of this project is to understand the microphysical mechanisms and to quantify the strength of crystal-rich lavas deformed at different fabric orientations and confining pressures.<\/p>\n<p>The work will be conducted primarily in Prague at the Institute of Geophysics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IG CAS). Experimental work will be carried out in cooperation with our partner, Dr. Mat\u011bj Pe\u010d, in his laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>You Will<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Conduct high-temperature deformation experiments on natural trachyte and dacite lava samples using deformation rigs in the laboratory of Dr. Mat\u011bj Pe\u010d at MIT.<\/li>\n<li>Develop microphysical models of crystalline lava deformation to constrain its rheological properties.<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate with the Tectonic Modeling team at IGCAS (Prague) and with partners at MIT (USA) to describe ductile-to-brittle transitions in crystalline lavas and to develop a&nbsp;new conceptual model of lava-dome growth and fragmentation.<\/li>\n<li>Present experimental results at international conferences and contribute to peer-reviewed manuscripts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Requirements<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>MSc degree in Earth Sciences, Geology, Volcanology, or a&nbsp;related field (or equivalent, with thesis defense completed by the start date).<\/li>\n<li>Background in igneous petrology, rheology, or experimental petrology.<\/li>\n<li>Experience with high-temperature experiments, microstructural analysis (SEM\/\u00b5CT), or computational modeling (e.g., MATLAB or Python) is advantageous.<\/li>\n<li>Excellent communication skills in English.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>What We Offer<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Assistance with PhD enrollment at Charles University.
