Dr. Luděk Vecsey (1972) works at the Institute of Geophysics CAS and is part of the Litosphere Working Group. He obtained his Ph.D. and RNDr. degrees at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University in 2002. During his postgraduate studies, he obtained a short-time fellowship at the MSI, Minneapolis.

Luděk focuses on the research of the lithospheric structure and its development, with an emphasis on the anisotropic properties of the Earth-upper mantle. He is demanding high quality input data for his research, and hence he suggests procedures and metrics for monitoring the quality of data and metadata. This careful quality control is applied to both data from mobile seismic stations of the MOBNET pool and data from permanent and temporary European networks (stored in EIDA).

Research of the Lithosphere requires seismic signals from as dense seismic networks as possible. Together with the Litosphere Working Group, Luděk participates in international passive seismic experiments covering Europe from Scandinavia through the Bohemian Massif to the Apennine Peninsula. Today, the largest European seismic experiment AlpArray is being held, focusing on the deep structure of the Alps and their wider neighborhood.

Luděk likes programming. An enormously increasing number of seismic stations and the data volumes have required the transition to full automation of data processing in scientific methods. These tasks are helped by using the modern programming language Python and its seismological module ObsPy.

A team of authors consisting of Dr. Jaroslava Plomerová, Dr. Vladislav Babuška, and Dr. Luděk Vecsey received The Award of the Czech Academy of Sciences for outstanding results of great scientific significance in 2010.
