The Institute of Geophysics operates several visitor centers throughout the Czech Republic where visitors can learn interesting facts about earthquakes, volcanoes, the structure of the Earth’s interior and the processes that take place there. Visitors can see the instruments we use to monitor the heart of the Earth and learn the principles on which the measurements are based. In Kašperské Hory, it is possible to go below ground via old mining works. All expositions and events include an interactive part, so they are also suitable for children or school groups.

Kašperské Hory – museum of seismometry and tour to seismic sensor in the Kristýna adit
The historic Kristýna adit, which dates back to 1805, was originally used for gold mining, but now seismic sensors are located in its three branches. The Kašperské Hory (KHC) station has been part of the Czech regional seismic network since its establishment (1960s), as well as the world network of seismic stations. It belongs to one of the most sensitive in the world. The station recorded very clearly the recent devastating earthquake in Turkey on 6 February 2023 and its many aftershocks.
