Joint inversion for seismic moment tensors and Green’s functions (GA ČR 19-06422S)

Catalogues of seismic moment tensors (MT) serve as a basic source of information about the orientation of active faults, tectonic stress and fracture processes. Determining accurate MTs is a primary goal of the modern seismology. The aim of the project is to develop and test new advanced methods of the MT inversion and to apply these methods to improving existing local and global MT catalogues including the Harvard CMT catalogue. Instead of calculating MTs from observations of individual earthquakes, we propose a joint inversion for MTs from observations of a large set of earthquakes from a given seismically active area. The new inversion scheme will make possible to calculate MTs but also to improve Green’s functions which are the main factor limiting the accuracy of the inversion. The method will be tested on observations of local natural and induced seismicity and on global deep-focus seismicity. The results of the project can improve MT catalogues produced by seismological centres and can contribute to understanding tectonic processes in seismic regions in the world
