Jan Michálek (1982) began contributing to seismic research in 2006 at IG CAS, initially as member of the WEBNET group studying seismic activity in West Bohemia (CZ). Early work focused on analyzing inter-swarm patterns, utilizing cross-correlation techniques to identify groups of similar events (Fischer and Michálek, 2008). He contributed to advancing seismological techniques for estimation earthquake source parameters. This involved applying novel approaches for estimating source parameters – notably utilizing the SEISMON software (Mertl and Hausmann, 2009) – allowing for detailed analysis of earthquakes from events like the 2000 and 2008 swarms, published in Michálek and Fischer (2013). He also participated in collaborative projects, including a significant effort with Iceland deploying the REYKJANET network in 2013.

From 2014 to 2025, Jan Michálek transitioned his research focus to Norway, joining the seismological team at the Department of Earth Science, University of Bergen. Initially as a postdoctoral fellow within the NEONOR2 project, he contributed to the geodynamical modeling of the Nordland region, primarily through detailed analysis of earthquakes – specifically relative locations using hypoDD and focal mechanism determination. Beyond data analysis, Jan Michálek also played a vital role in maintaining the NEONOR2 seismic network. Subsequently, as a Senior Engineer, he was instrumental in building out the infrastructure and integrating geoscientific data into the broader European Plate Observing System (EPOS) framework, contributing to the development of a dedicated portal for multidisciplinary geoscientific data access.

Throughout his career, Jan Michálek has been involved in supporting broader research infrastructure initiatives. This includes contributions to EPOS-related projects like EPOS-Norway, EPOS-IP, EPOS-SP, EPOS ON, ENVRI-FAIR, GeoINQUIRE, and Skills4EOSC where the focus was on integrating geoscientific data into long-term sustainable infrastructure and promoting best practices for data management.
