Dr. Petr Brož, a planetery researcher of the Institute of Geophysics of the Czech Academy of Science collaborating with international scientists, have discovered evidence of volcanic activity within Valles Marineris on Mars. The study estimates that the volcanoes are relatively young and that this volcanic field represents a promissing area where to search for extraterestrial life.

Anisotropy and Dynamics of the Lithosphere-Asthenosphere System will be organized by the Geophysical Inst. (J. Plomerova), the Yale University, New Haven, USA (S-I. Karato) and the Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia (J. C. Afonso) in Hotel Globus, Prague, Czech Republic on May 22-25, 2016). Abstract deadline: April 30, 2016. Early indication of your interest to participate will be appreciated.


Institute of Geology of CAS will contribute to the international scientific and artistic project on landscape. The main exhibition will take place in the Školská 28 Gallery, Prague, on 2nd February to 4th March 2015. The works by Czech, Norwegian and Icelandic artists will reflect the landscapes of several European countries, for more details see link.


EPOS IP (European Plate Observing System - Implementation Phase) Project started on 1 October 2015. Institute of Geophysics is Lead partner of WP13 Geomagnetic Observations and participates in WP14 Anthropogenic Hazard. The Project is supported by Horizon2020 grant no. 676564 and its duration is 4 years.


Prokop Závada, a reseracher of the Insitute of Geophysics of CAS, led the scientific team, which investigated the legendary american mountain Devils Tower. This landmark is a sacred place for many Native American tribes and played a major role in the movie 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind'. A new hypothesis that explains the geological origin of this mountain attracted interest not only of the scientific community, but also journalists. A report about this new hypothesis is now introduced in Scientific American magazine.


First invated lecture from spring session of 'Spořilovské expedice' will be hold on Thursday 19.3. at 16:00 in big hall of Institute of Geophysics of Czech Academy of Science. The talk will be given by Thomas Platz and it will be about Volcanism Across the Innter Solar System. Everyone interested is sincerely welcome to come.
